VoiceWing Review

Verizon is an established brand in the DSL and phone market. To try and compete with the mushrooming VoIP players that eat in to its phone business, Verizon entered the fray themselves with VoiceWing. This can be used both by existing Verizon DSL users as well other broadband users. However, VoiceWing does itself no favors by offering only one plan at an exorbitant rate.

Buying and Setting Up
VoiceWing charges a $39.95 activation fee and sends users the Linksys PAP2-VN TA adapter within 7 working days.  The plan however comes with a safe 30 day money back guarantee for those who are unsatisfied after trying out the service.

Product Features
VoiceWing is truly rich in features. It offers all that other providers offer and some more.

  • Call Forwarding to an alternate number after five rings.
  • Simultaneous Ringing for important calls to three different numbers.
  • Enhanced Do Not Disturb screens out all calls except pre-specified numbers
  • Call Waiting  tone that alerts of a second incoming call
  • Caller Name and Number Identification
  • Three-way Conference Calling
  • Local Number Portability for landline numbers with 14 days notice.
  • 911 Emergency Dialing routed through a local PSAP
  • 411 Directory Service at $1 per call
  • Back-Up Number
  • Speed Dial
  • Voice Mail
  • Visual Voice Mail
  • Fax Compatibility
  • Address Book Synchronization with Microsoft Outlook

Call Quality
While call quality is consistent it is not as clear as that of an analog phone and has a faint background noise that is audible to both outgoing and incoming ends. The internet also slows down quite a bit while VoiceWing is being used. Many of the smaller business VoIP providers are able to offer better quality than VoiceWing, which makes you wonder why they charge the moon for their service.

Call Plans
VoiceWing offers very little flexibility while choosing plans and is probably the most expensive VoIP service available today.

  • VoiceWing 500: 500 minutes to USA at $19.95 per month and 4 cents per minute thereafter.

  • VoiceWing Unlimited (for Verizon DSL customers): Unlimited calls at $29.95 per month for the first year and $34.95 per month thereafter.

  • VoiceWing Unlimited (any Broadband): Unlimited calling at $34.95 per month.

Customer Service
Customers have access to toll free customer and technical support between 9 AM and PM on weekdays and 10 AM to 5 PM on Saturday. The lack of Sunday and 24 / 7 support is a bit of a dampener. Email resolutions are guaranteed within 24 business hours.

Some existing Verizon DSL customers might be inclided to try out VoiceWing owing to long standing loyalty to the brand. New users of VoIP services would be better of looking elsewhere. Indeed, unless VoiceWing considers some serious revamping of their pricing structure, they will be losing out to smaller players who provide as good if not better service.
